At 1015 East Hastings beside the Hastings viaduct we combined permanent underpinning and anchored shoring to protect the bridge while building a three level parkade. On Glen Drive, difficult excavation near dense utilities was managed with cantilever pipe piles, deadman tieback anchors and blocks, staged to control street surcharge. We led contaminated site ESC design and monitoring with the environmental engineer, completed hydrogeotechnical seepage analysis to estimate dewatering and size treatment, and prepared the provincial water use permit. Movement thresholds were set at 5 mm for bridge closure so design, sequencing, and rigorous anchor testing were tailored to prevent movement, and recorded movement was about 1 mm.

At Imperial Street in Burnaby we are supporting a 30 storey high rise with a four level parkade. A sonic drilling program to about 50 feet and MASW established site specific Vs30 for seismic design. One side required non encroaching shoring, so we used internal rakers and walers to keep all support inside the property line. Groundwater is managed with weepholes, sumps, and pumping to protect the prepared foundation subgrade, and conventional foundations on very dense native soils are released at the bottom of excavation once bearing is verified at the design subgrade elevation.
